Ideas to Reduce Extra Waste and Packaging
Buy food in bulk. Many food sources are sold in individual and convenient packaging, but this contributes to extra waste.
Try to cook homemade meals more often during the week. You'll find that you'll save money, and will also eat healthier. Read about seasonal produce in our wellness section.
Buy household items in concentrated forms. This reduces access packaging and can be very cost effective. Several concentrated household cleaners will have you add the water. Brilliant.
Avoid products that have access packaging.
Reduce your store bought Java. I know it seems hard, but just look at the waste that goes into every cup of retail coffee. A disposable cup, a plastic lid, a plastic stir stick, etc. So if you already feel defensive (I can be on this topic) then try to remember to bring in your own cup.
Look for plastics with #1 PETE, #2 HDPE, #4 LDPE and #5 PP. To make it easy, just remember 1, 2, 4 and 5.
Try to not line your trash cans with a plastic bag. I got out of this habit when I started using my cloth grocery bags. I found I really didn't need the plastic bag to line my bathroom trash cans.
Don't forget to consider composting those table scraps! It may even save money with the trash collection service.
